Organic Search

What is Organic Search?

There are two types of search results, organic and paid. Organic results are web pages that rank naturally based on relevance to the search that has been conducted. Businesses embark on SEO campaigns to help their sites rank organically in search engines.

Keyword Optimisation

To embark on your SEO campaign, you must first establish your keywords. Your keywords should be words used in a search by those interested in your products/services.

Only target one keyword/phrase per page when writing your content. Then, ensure that each page has content that includes words linked to its target keyword. Include keywords in the:

  • URL – the address for a web page.
    • Keep URL’s as short as possible and separate words with ‘-‘.
  • Meta title – the title that will display on the browser tab and in search engines
  • Meta description – the summary of your content that appears to users in search results
  • First paragraph
    • This ensures the reader understands what the content is about.
  • Page text
    • Naturally using the keywords throughout the page content helps Google ascertain relevance to the intended audience.
  • Titles & Sub-headings (also known as H tags) – H1 is typically the page title, h2-6 are used as varying levels of subheadings.
    • The page title should include a clear benefit to hook the reader in or offer to solve a problem the reader might have. Ultimately, it needs to spark the curiosity of the person reading.
  • Image file name / title / ALT text
    • This should be relevant to what the image represents.

Local SEO

Local SEO helps you promote your business by optimising your website to make it more visible across local search results on Google. Businesses with a physical location or that serve a specific area will benefit from local SEO. You can help your website benefit from local SEO by:

  • Including your name, address and phone number across your website.
  • Using your businesses Google category as a keyword for your homepage.
  • Optimising pages and posts with keyword + location combinations e.g. websites Buckinghamshire.
  • List your company, linking to your website, in business directories such as Google My Business, Bing Places, Yell.com, Yelp.

Backlinks

Backlinks are also known as inbound links. They are links from one website to another website. The more backlinks your website has, the more ‘votes’ that page is deemed to have in the eyes of the search engine gods. Often the more backlinks a page has, the better the organic search ranking. Guest blogging is a great way to get backlinks organically.

SEO No-No’s

  • Duplicate content – Google will penalise a website if the content has been copied directly from other web pages. Your site will not benefit from using duplicate content,  whether it’s from a web page within your own website or you have stolen the content from elsewhere.
  • Keyword Stuffing – overuse of keywords will also see your website penalised. Content should be written naturally for humans.

Paid Adverts

You can boost your online presence by paying for adverts to appear in targeted online locations. These ads are optimised with relevant keywords and targeted at specific groups likely to engage with your brand. This can be achieved via search engines or social media, including:

Social Media

To engage with potential customers and drive them to your website it is important to have active profiles on relevant social media platforms. These are the online places your target audience is most likely to be present.

Social Media Profile

If you are present across more than one social platform, ensure your brand identity is consistent across each network and your website. This includes the:

  • Name e.g. company name
  • Social media handle e.g. @writeable.co.uk
  • Profile picture
  • Cover image
  • Description
    • You should make the description of your business concise and to the point.
    • Ensure you include relevant keywords.
    • Link to the homepage or relevant landing page of your website.
    • Include a call to action.

Social Media Posts

  • When posting accompanying images ensure these are the relevant dimensions for the specific platform you are posting to.
  • Make posts and images attention-grabbing.
  • Branded images help promote brand identity.
  • Ensure any text contained within images is big enough to read.
  • Written content needs to be relevant and to the point. Avoid over-explaining in favour of something sharp and concise.
  • Ensure content from your website is easy to share across social media. Include links to social media profiles or sharing icons.

Take time out to engage with those following you. Respond to comments. Thank followers for likes. This type of engagement will help build relationships and grow a loyal following.
